About us

DriveLab™ has provided Driver Assessment and Rehabilitation Programs since 1996. Our expert driver/passenger/pedestrian rehabilitation team provide assessment and treatment to at-risk drivers referred by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, insurance companies, law firms, family physicians and other health care professionals. This is in responds to the growing need for driver assessment, rehabilitation and education services for an aging population and individuals with physical, cognitive or psychological impairments.

DriveLab™ is a Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO), Approved Functional Assessment Centre.

DriveLab™ Inc. is a member organization of ADED (The Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists) that was established in 1977 to support professionals working in the field of driver education/driver training and transportation equipment modifications for persons with disabilities through education and information dissemination.

Our rehabilitation treatment is guided by the following principles:

  • Safe driving involves complex and performance-based functional skills and is an important activity of daily living – (i.e. the ability to drive and travel safely for work, school, family and leisure purposes). Safe driving involves a combination of cognitive, emotional, behavioural, physical, and knowledge based abilities.
  • To assist the client’s return to driver/passenger functioning, driver rehabilitation must be provided in a safe, client centred, evidence-based, graduated and therapist/instructor controlled manner, in the context of existing health regulations, professional liability and legal realities and the Ontario Highway Traffic Act. R.SO., 1990. Treatment plans are individualized and developed specifically to meet the client`s driver/passenger rehabilitation needs.
  • Driver/passenger rehabilitation requires an interdisciplinary team approach that is provided by qualified and knowledgeable professionals familiar with the specialized field of driver rehabilitation and the special needs of “at risk” drivers. Our team includes qualified Psychologists, Psychotherapists, Rehabilitation Therapists and Social Workers (with expertise in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – CBT), Occupational Therapists and Certified Driving Instructors, specializing in Driver Rehabilitation. Our team liaises with family physicians and other health care providers and provides assessment, progress and re-evaluation reports detailing our driver/passenger treatment goals and outcomes.
  • DriveLab™ Inc. follows the principles recommended by the Association for Driver Rehabilitation Specialists (ADED)

DriveLab™ provides expert driver assessment and rehabilitation services to a range of clients including but not limited to:
-Clients who have been asked to complete a Functional Driving Assessment by their physicians or the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) or who have a medically suspended Driver’s Licence
-Clients involved in a motor vehicle accident and who may be experiencing a physical or psychological impairment
DriveLab accepts referrals from the driver themselves, a family member, Family Physician, Specialist, insurance company, legal representative, health professional.
Clients with a variety of medical conditions or injuries including but not limited to:

-musculoskeltal or orthoapedic
-congenital/developmental
-cognitive impairments
-neurological
-psychological

DRIVING ASSESSMENT: comprised of two parts completed by our skilled Occupational Therapists and Certified Driving Instructors.

INITIAL IN-CLINIC ASSESSMENT: Completed by our Certified Occupational Therapists with the client, consists of:
-Medical history
-Physical examination
-Cognitive assessment
-Perceptual assessment
-Road safety assessment

These assessment tools are evidence based and designed to assess an individual’s medical fitness to drive

A Functional Driving Assessment is approximately 2.5 hours in total (completed on the same day) and consists of a clinical assessment (1.5 hours) with an Occupational Therapist which includes a brief medical history, physical assessment, cognitive and perceptual assessment followed by an in-vehicle assessment (45 minutes) with a Licensed Driving Instructor and Occupational Therapist which takes place in our vehicle equipped with dual-brake system and consists of an in-car assessment including basic driving maneuvers with a debriefing at the end to go over the results of the assessment and provide recommendations.
Fees vary with the type of assessment that is needed.
A Functional Driving Assessment is not covered by The Ministry of Transportation or Ministry of Health. We may be able to help you identify funding sources.
No. Only the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario has the authority to suspend a driver’s licence. We will evaluate you and if we determine that your medical condition is affecting your ability to safely operate a vehicle then we will forward our report to The Ministry of Transportation, Medical Review Section for their review and decision.
Yes, You must have a valid Ontario Driver’s Licence to participate in the on-road portion of the assessment. However, if your driver’s licence is medically suspended, DriveLab will request a One-Day Temporary Driver’s Licence permit through The Ministry of Transportation, Medical Review Section, for the assessment date.

We are typically booking in 2-3 weeks depending on the status of your driver’s licence.
